India’s tropical climate and diverse soil types allow for the cultivation of cotton with varying fiber lengths ranging from 12 mm to 36 mm. The different types of cotton are classified into three categories based on fiber length. The following are popular varieties:

Long-staple cotton, as the name suggests, has the longest fiber length ranging from 24 to 36 mm. This type of cotton is long, shiny, and fine, making it ideal for producing superior quality cloth. Long-staple cotton is widely used in India and is available at a low price. It accounts for around 50% of the total cotton production in India, with major producing states being Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Medium staple cotton has a fiber length between 20 mm to 24 mm and accounts for approximately 44% of the total Kapas production. It is the second most used fiber in India, providing good quality cloth at an economical price. Major producing states are Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

Short-staple cotton has the shortest fiber length of less than 20 mm and produces inferior quality cotton cloth at a low price. It accounts for approximately 6% of the total cotton production in India, with major producers being Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab.

Varieties Of Raw Cotton

1. S6: S6 is a type of raw cotton variety that is widely cultivated in India. It belongs to the short-staple category of cotton and has a fiber length of less than 27 mm. It is mainly grown in the southern states of India such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

2. J34: J34 is a raw cotton variety that is primarily grown in Pakistan. It belongs to the medium-staple category of cotton and has a fiber length of 22-24 mm. J34 cotton is known for its good quality and high yield, making it a popular choice among cotton growers in Pakistan. It is mainly cultivated in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

3. MCU5: MCU5 is a type of raw cotton variety that is grown in India. It belongs to the medium-staple category of cotton and has a fiber length of 20-24 mm.
